Does Oily Skin Really Need Moisturiser?

My skin is already oily. Why would I add moisturiser?

It sounds logical, but skipping moisturiser can actually make oily skin worse.

Let’s understand why.

Why Oily Skin Still Needs Moisturiser

Oily skin produces more sebum (oil), but oil and hydration are not the same thing.

  • Oil = lipids produced by sebaceous glands
  • Hydration = water content in the skin

Your skin can be oily and dehydrated at the same time.

When you skip moisturiser, your skin may:

  • Feel tight after washing
  • Produce even more oil to compensate
  • Become irritated from acne treatments
  • Develop a damaged skin barrier

This often leads to more breakouts, not fewer.

What Type of Moisturiser Should Oily Skin Use?

Not all moisturisers are heavy or greasy.

Look for:
✔Oil-free formulas
✔ Gel or water-based textures
✔ Non-comedogenic label
✔ Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides

Avoid thick, occlusive creams unless specifically advised.

Will Moisturiser Make Acne Worse?

A suitable moisturiser does not cause acne.

In fact, properly hydrated skin tolerates acne treatments better, which improves overall results.

Many people think their moisturiser caused breakouts, when actually:

  • The product was too heavy for their skin type
  • Or their skin barrier was already irritated

When Can Oily Skin Skip Moisturiser?

In very humid weather, some people may feel comfortable using:

  • A hydrating sunscreen alone in the morning
  • A light gel at night

But completely avoiding moisturiser long-term is usually not ideal.

Moisturising is not about making your skin greasy.
It’s about keeping your barrier strong and your oil production regulated.
